Allegra Giagu
Born in Australia, Operatic Lyric-Coloratura Mezzo-Soprano, Allegra Giagu, made her Sydney Opera House début as a soloist for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra at an early age, embarking on a career that has taken her across the globe, acclaimed for interpretations of Mozart's Donna Elvira [Don Giovanni], Dorabella [Cosi fan Tutte] and Countess [Le nozze di Figaro] - most recently for Edinburgh Festival [EdFringe].
Beyond the stage, Allegra is known for her evocative performance on Dario Marianelli’s Oscar Nominated and Ivor Award winning Anna Karenina soundtrack (Available on iTunes), and participation on Master & Commander [Peter Wier], Moulin Rouge! [Baz Luhrmann], and Chris Cunningham’s Gucci Flora campaign featuring the late Donna Summer.
Recent new-music collaborations include principal roles in The Carnival, A Circus Opera by Australian composer, Chloe Charody and virtuoso violinist, Sonja Schebeck [The Freestyle Orchestra] (London West End, Touring UK, Hamburg and Sydney, Australia), and in Vienna, creating the title role in a new chamber opera, Photo Socrates, by Clio Montrey. In September 2016, Allegra performed an exciting 're-imaging' of Verdi's Macbeth by US composer, Peter Stopschinski, in a co-production with director, Luke Leonard and Monk Parrots (NYC) for the Nagambie Lakes Opera Festival.
In print, Allegra has appeared in the New York Times, photographed by Bill Cunningham, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Stage [UK], and numerous reviews, editorials and interviews at home and abroad. She first came into the media spotlight as soloist for The Edinburgh Military Tattoo – Salute to Australia 2005, and performed over six nights, leading to a collaboration with Dame Judi Dench and ClassicFM in London. Allegra was also a member of Opera Australia's Children's Chorus, Sydney Children's Choir and Gondwana Voices, under the direction of Lyn Williams, OAM.
A current Studio Young Artist and Gertrude Johnson Fellow at Gertrude Opera [The Opera Studio], Allegra's awards include The Helen Myers Vocal Scholarship and full-scholarships for her studies at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Allegra was also the recipient of a Wiener Meisterkurse Scholarship for studies in Vienna, Austria, working intensively with soprano, Birgid Steinberger. She also studied under Mara Zampieri and Federico Faggion in association with the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi, Padua.
